Network Operations Center (NOC) Engineers have a very rewarding career in maintaining, debugging and improving large-scale networks from a central location. In order to be considered for this position, one must have extremely good network diagnostic skills, a firm foundation of both Linux and sysadmin commands and be able to work well in a team to tackle a wide range of issues. In addition to this, one must possess good analytical skills in order to interpret and sort data from various sources in order to track down problem areas quickly and to implement solutions in an effective manner.
A NOC Engineer should also have a basic understanding of Internet routing technologies, Linux kernel, scripting languages and possess excellent documentation skills. As this position is very technical and computer oriented, many places will insist on a potential candidate having at least a bachelor's degree in computer science.
