In the world of information technology, there are dozens of different roles, each vital to the process of creation, development, implementation and deployment. For customers, however, there is one role in particular that matters most: Desktop Support.
This largely customer-facing role generally falls under the umbrella of IT service management. Desktop Support representatives focus on helpdesk issues, using online ticketing systems as well as telephone support to guide users through everything from software installation to troubleshooting. They also provide internal technical support, assisting individual departments, updating hardware and software and providing internal IT helpdesk assistance across entire enterprises.
The Desktop Support position is largely an entry-level one that can be the first step on a larger career path. Desktop Support specialists often become analysts, network support technicians, network administrators, IT managers and senior systems administrators. Applicants should have a two- to four-year degree in the IT field; some companies waive this requirement for applicants with extensive IT experience.
Denver is a major business center with a high concentration of technology industry, including Arrow Electronics, the region's largest employer as well as DISH Network, CenturyLink, OpenTable, Vantiv, Healthgrades, Webroot and more. Even Silicon Valley giants like Google and Oracle have entire divisions headquartered in Denver, employing hundreds of people each.
The city and outlying areas are remarkably easy to get around, connected by freeways and light rail. The metro area features over 85 paved trails for commuter and leisure cycling.
