We are looking for a senior engineer with substantial experience working with state-of-the-art, big data, low-latency, event streaming systems that can help us design and build our data platform. This role is not focused on maintenance or updates to an existing code base but instead on the ground-up construction of a new system! This is a high-impact architect role. Bonus points if you have experience working with data scientists, building machine-learning platforms (e.g., for recommender systems), and understand the real-world, business use and impact of data. Calm has an extremely data-driven culture and your work will be critical to our success as a company.

Outcomes

* Industry experience with Spark, Spark Streaming, Kafka, or alternatives such as Kinesis, Storm, etc
* Strong computer science fundamentals
* Experience writing production-level code in Python, Go, and/or Scala in production environments
* Substantial experience working with AWS Extensive experience working with distributed data systems
* Database and distributed data systems expert with experience building and maintaining highly available data storage systems
* Great communicator who can easily break down complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders
* Ideally, you have helped scale a company through periods of extreme growth
* Bonus points if you have experience with any of the following areas: Containerization, Kubernetes, worked with data scientists and can understand their needs, machine-learning and/or deep learning platforms

Competencies

* Distributed systems expert who has scaled a company through periods of extreme growth
* Strong computer science fundamentals
* Polyglot with experience using Python and/or Scala in production environments
* Database expert with experience building and maintaining highly available data storage systems
* Experience scaling a Spark or Kafka cluster from small to very large
* Experience building and maintaining critical ETL pipelines
* Substantial experience working with AWS
* Great communicator who can easily break down complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders
* Ideally, you also have experience with Redshift and Airflow (or similar tool like Luigi)
