Job Description
As an Opto-Mechanical Research Engineer at Facebook Reality Labs, you will develop state of the art prototypes, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation near to eye display (NED) and Imaging Systems to create transformative experiences. You will become part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling, simulation, and fabrication. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas and are able to drive a concept into a prototype. Starting with a broad scientific background, be willing to become a quick expert in a new area, and quickly build and test new prototypes using novel materials and/or by integrating structures in new ways leveraging a strong mechanical background.
We're looking for a modeler and hands-on builder of precision mechanism and/or electromechanical designs interested in applying this knowledge to solve complex optical imaging problems. This is a full-time position and requires a degree in mechanical engineering or similar, and a strong background in machine design and prototyping. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team and exhibit excellent interpersonal communication skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Lead research engineering activities in cross-functional team environment
Model, build, test, and refine prototypes
Participate on a research team providing advice/guidance/insights to your peers in your area(s) of expertise
Precision machine and electromechanical systems design applied to developing custom optical and metrology equipment
Leveraging knowledge of mechanics and electromechanical systems to develop novel testing capabilities and successfully characterize a range of materials (including polymers) and transducer systems
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent
8+ years (with MS) or 5+ years (with PhD) of design, testing, and prototyping experience
Experience in precision mechanisms, mechatronics, and/or electro-mechanical systems
Applied knowledge in various manufacturing and rapid prototyping techniques (Machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, etc.)
Experience in 3D design modeling
Experience with finite element analysis software (such as COMSOL, ANSYS, etc.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Background in Optics fundamentals, applied to past design/prototyping work
Expertise in solid and/or polymer mechanics
Hands-on materials testing experience
Experience with polymer processing and process development
Experience in application of design experience for manufacturing and/or manufacturing process development
Knowledge of SolidWorks 3D modeling software
Programming experience with MATLAB and/or LabVIEW
Experience with ray tracing software (Zemax, CODE V or equivalent)
Experience with multiphysics simulation in FEA software
