Job Description

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2019 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform research in the area of scalable optimization algorithms and high-performance computing (HPC) solvers for the optimal design and control complex engineering systems. You will develop optimization algorithms, provide the supporting mathematical analysis of such algorithms, support ongoing efforts in solver development, and deploy the resulting HPC tools for problems related to power grid and additive manufacturing. This position is within the Computation Directorate, Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) Division.

Essential Duties

* Research new strategies and explore existing techniques to develop scalable optimization algorithms that are efficient on existing and next-generation DOE leadership supercomputers.
* Perform mathematical analysis (iteration complexity, convergence, rates of convergence) of the algorithms and ensure that these algorithms perform efficiently on massively parallel HPC environments.
* Provide parallel programming implementations in C++ and corresponding code optimization and profiling on select HPC machines.
* Develop a portfolio of optimization models in power grid and additive manufacturing and assist with the integration of the optimization solvers into simulation and application codes.
* Participate in the establishment of future research directions and contribute to group grant proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals.
* Document complex research and development progress via technical reports, journal publications, and conference presentations and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to accomplish research goals.
* Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* PhD in applied mathematics, computational science, or a related field.
* Demonstrated knowledge of numerical optimization, numerical linear algebra, and numerical analysis, and, in particular, of higher-order algorithms for continuous optimization.
* Experience in scientific computing and parallel programming with MPI.
* Demonstrated knowledge of optimization theory in general.
* Experience programming in C/C++ in a Unix/Linux environment.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct high quality research and to develop implementations to evaluate the results.
* Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
* Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal communication skills necessary to work effectively in a dynamic team environment.

Desired Qualifications

* Experience with PDE-constrained optimization.
* Expert knowledge of the algebraic modeling languages JuMP or Pyomo.
* Experience with power grid modeling and/or topology optimization.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
