Virta is the first and only clinically-proven treatment to reverse type 2 diabetes without the use of medications or surgery, and our mission is to reverse type 2 diabetes in 100M people by 2025.
The Virta treatment is a combination of a personalized nutritional intervention, a medication management and elimination program, and a continuous remote care model built on our own software platform that allows us to treat patients in an on-demand fashion anywhere in the world. Besides connecting patients to our world-class team of Virta Health Coaches and Physicians, our software uses machine learning, health data, and complex algorithms to increase patient health outcomes and scale our treatment far beyond the capabilities of the traditional healthcare system.
Virta is different from other healthcare technology companies in that we have a uniquely cross-functional composition of engineering, research, and clinical teams. There are plenty of telehealth services, insurance providers, and electronic medical records companies in the health tech ecosystem, but at Virta we are not building tools to facilitate video chat between patients and their providers and we are not building tools for use in clinics. We are developing a brand new care model in which patients receive physician-grade medical care 24/7.
How can a physician effectively manage hundreds or thousands of patients? How can we automate protocols, patient issue detection, and biomarker management? How can we keep patients safe at scale? There aren’t any answers out there because these problems have yet to be solved. We are breaking new ground at Virta, and this is just a taste of what you will work on if you join.
Because of the effects of Covid-19 Virta has become a remote-first company. That means all employees in the company can work from home indefinitely, and all company experiences will be designed with the remote employee in mind!
Diversity and inclusion are particularly important at Virta since we’re tasked with treating a vastly diverse patient population. Effectively personalizing care across our patients requires empathy and a thorough understanding of the specific needs of multiple demographics. We firmly believe that we can only accomplish this with a team comprised of people representative of our patient population. We have a task force called Virtans for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion whose mission is to ensure equitable access to opportunity and treatment among employees, patients, customers, and job applicants. At Virta, our goal is to foster an environment where everyone can flourish.
We want to create a sustainable, fulfilling, fair, and cultivating environment for all, which is why we have a leveling system that provides standardized paths containing well-defined, achievable milestones to guide and motivate engineers to take their careers to the next level. Semi-annual performance reviews provide ample opportunities for engineers to advance.
With this framework as a foundation, engineers are encouraged to proactively take ownership over their own career development. We aim to empower our engineers to take on as much responsibility as they are willing to handle, in order to maximize impact and growth. In fact, many of our engineering leaders began their tenure as individual contributors and, in a couple cases, as contractors!
We have built our interview process to test each candidate’s ability to solve real problems encountered at Virta, and we aim to administer our interviews in as realistic a working environment as possible. We don’t make candidates write code on whiteboards and we don’t ask questions related to data structures or algorithms rarely used in day-to-day work. All of our problems are derived or directly lifted from real work that has been completed at Virta.
In an effort to reduce bias in the interview process, we strive to maximize our use of standardized rubrics and we have a robust interviewer training program to ensure a consistent and expedient interview experience for every candidate.
