AetherWorks is based in the heart of Manhattan. We are engaged in the engineering and commercialization of promising software-related intellectual property assets. In addition to in-house development, AetherWorks provides consulting services to industry clients, including promising start-ups.
AetherWorks was founded in 2010 by Dr. Robert MacInnis, an alumni of the University of St Andrews and a Connecticut native. We currently have seven employees that are a great mix of business and development experience. Our company is fully funded and we are just about to release our first home grown product, AetherStore (AetherStore.com).
We believe that software should make your life easier, not harder, and that with quality engineering it is possible to create software that doesn’t fail.
We’re currently developing AetherStore, a software-defined storage product that enables you to pool the unused storage space in your network to create robust, secure network drives. Most companies use only a fraction of the space on their workstations and servers, leaving terabytes of space unused. With AetherStore you can control your entire network of available storage, aggregating it into one encrypted, replicated and deduplicated drive.
Each engineer at AetherWorks has a substantial impact on our systems and is given the opportunity to have a large amount of input into identifying possible new products, features and solutions to existing problems. Given the size of our team and the responsibility on each of our engineers it is extremely important that any candidate applying to join the team has a solid understanding of system architecture and how changes affect the testability, maintainability and scalability of systems. We also expect our engineers to understand the importance of automated testing and continuous integration in delivering bug-free, fully test-covered code in short time frames. Last but not least, we work using Agile/Scrum methodologies. Applicants are expected to have some experience in a similar environment.
We work in the office. Remote working is available when required, but we’re a small team and find it’s worthwhile to have everyone together as much as possible. Our hours are pretty flexible and our vacation is extremely generous. It is not unlimited by definition, but the general principle is that if we get our work done well, there is flexibility in terms of what we work on, and when we work on it.
The AetherWorks office is on the 18th floor at 501 Fifth Avenue. We have fantastic light and excellent views over Bryant park. We have comfortable shared spaces for meeting, eating, and taking a moment to relax. The office provides snacks and drinks, plenty of greenery, and some floor to ceiling whiteboard walls. We keep the fridge well stocked with drinks, and it is not uncommon that the day will finish with us on the couches working through ideas over a beer or just generally catching up.
Being a small company there are often office tasks that we'll take on ourselves, so you never know when you might find us with the music on and step ladders out…
